This annual event has become a firm favourite among lovers of classic steam engines. Featuring vintage steam machinery, as well as vintage classic cars, lorries, military displays and more, there’s something at the Torbay Steam Fair for any fan of modern history.
Since this year marks both the 70th anniversary of the first Land Rover and the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war, this years event will host two special commemorative displays over the course of the weekend. The 2018 edition of the event kicks off on August 3rd and continues on to August 5th – so make sure you’re in Torbay for what promises to be a weekend with a full head of steam behind it!
Sidmouth Folk Week
The oldest folk music festival in the UK returns to Sidmouth for 2018, marking 63 years since the festival’s founding in 1955. This year’s Sidmouth Folk Week will play host to over 700 diverse events between August 3rd and August 10th. Celebrating all things music, song and dance, the festival will be taking place at venues all across the seaside town of Sidmouth and offers an atmosphere offered by no other music event. This year’s line up includes artists such as Fairport Convention, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and poet Roger McGough – who will be performing his poetry to the music of LiTTLe MACHiNe – among many, many more acts.
So, if you’re after a unique live music experience, make sure you’re in the South Hams this August! You won’t want to miss this one.
Rails and Ales Gala at the South Devon Railway
This August Bank Holiday, the South Devon Railway Station in Staverton will be awash with both steam and suds as visitors celebrate both classic steam and diesel railway transport and local ales. With trains running from each end of the railway line – Totnes and Buckfastleigh – visitors will be able to ride the rails before enjoying the great choice of ales, craft beers and ciders available from award-winning Devon Diesel Society’s bar.
The attractions at the South Devon Railway centre at Buckfastleigh, including the museum, will be open as usual with the South Devon Railway’s vintage Routemaster bus running visitors to and from the famous Buckfast Abbey.
Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta
The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta is known as the “Best in the West” and for good reason. With top class entertainment coupled with an exciting competition, thousands of visitors from around the world will descend on Dartmouth between August 30th and September 1st for a special three-day event packed with boating, entertainment, delicious food, fireworks and so much more.
New for 2018 are flyboard displays taking place on the South Embankment. These exciting shows will see the display team flying over the water using special “flyboards” which allow the user to take off using the power of water pressure.
Galmpton Touring Park offers a great central location and is just 6 miles from central Dartmouth. Offering scenic views of the River Dart, there’s nowhere better to spend a weekend (or longer) in the South Hams. Book your next summer touring break at Galmpton Touring Park today!
